6th November homework, Lesson 1

What is my favorite tale and why?

Although every single tale throughout the play never failed to interest me, my favorite tale is 'East End Tales 8'
This is my favorite out of them all because I found the context of it the most memorable. The writing techniques contribute to this; the writer first describes one of the characters as a 'Urban Lioness'. The use of metaphors throughout the tale help to create visual representation of what image the characters give off. The precise detail throughout the play helps to create the atmosphere of it; the description of sound and the use of onomatopoeia is a prime example. The tale also touches up on a serious topic yet it doesn't try to sugar coat it which adds to the sharpness and edginess of the scene. There is a clear build of tension throughout the tale due to the style that the writer has chosen to narrate in; it is almost poetic. In class me, Daniella and Nina were chosen to perform this tale. I extremely enjoyed the challenge and would have loved to spend more time working on the scene.

What did I think of the play and what is it about?

I thought that the play was very interesting. Not only were the 9 short stories very gripping, I was intrigued by the style of the piece and the way Fin Kennedy chose to write the play. It is almost poetic, in most cases every other line rhymed. As we were reading it as a class we formed a sort of rhythm/ beat which also made it sound like a poem.
Most of the stories touched up on some very serious themes, for example domestic violence, the drudgery of low-skilled jobs, petty crime and high density living. These are all obviously very intense subject matters but I think that as a class we are all mature enough to handle them sensibly.

The play consists of 9 stories which are all from different view points of people that live in the East End. Each person describes their own different story, for example "East end tales 5" is about a man who is living next door to his neighbour who is dealing with domestic abuse. The story is very dramatic, as are most of the others.

What knowledge did I develop from the start of the lesson?

At the start of the lesson, it was pretty clear that most of our class (including myself) didn't have a strong idea about The East End. When we were told to do an improvised sketch as a whole class, most of us used references from what we had seen from the TV show EastEnders! After we had been given more information about what The East End really is like, we were then able to picture more of a realistic view of The East end.

Jake and Matteo, two peers in our class, both actually live in the east end so they were able to guide us and give us reference as to how we could act out a accurate representation of the East end.

By the End of the Lesson I was far more educated about the East End than I have ever been! My knowledge of the area was based on what is portrayed through Eastenders, which is extremely incorrect! I was afterwards informed that it is an area that is full of a variety of cultures, ethnicity and nationalities- I was immediately  intrigued and interested in what the East End had to offer.
